'Thereupon,' he said, ` fierce men of fiery aspect, who were standing by and understood the meaning of the sound, came forward, and seized some of them and carried them away, but bound Ardiaeus and others hand and foot and head, threw them down and flayed them and dragged them along the road at the side and carded them on thorns, saying to all that passed that they were being taken to be plunged into Tartarus, and explaining the reason for this fate of theirs.'
" After that, he said, though many and divers fears had come upon him and his fellows, this surpassed them all, lest the voice should sound for each one as he attempted to ascend; while it was with exceeding joy that each went up when all was silent. Of such a nature, said Er, were the punishments and penalties, and the rewards were just the counterpart of these. Now when they had passed each seven days in the meadow, on the eighth they were compelled to rise up and move on; and on the fourth day after, they came to a spot whence they could see from above a line of light straight as a column extending through the whole heaven and through the earth, in color resembling the rainbow, but brighter and purer. To this they came after advancing a day's journey; and there, in the middle of the light, they saw extending out of heaven the ends of its fastenings; for this light is the belt of heaven holding together the whole circumference as undergirders bind a trireme ; and from these ends is extended the spindle of Necessity, by means of which all the revolving bodies turn.
