Then he saw their souls departing, after judgment had been passed upon them, by one of the openings of heaven and one of earth; by the other two, souls were arriving, on the one side coming up out of the earth, covered with dust and dirt, on the other coming down from heaven, pure and stainless. The souls, as they arrived, seemed to have come as from a long journey, and were glad to turn aside into the meadow, where they encamped as in a place of assembly ; and all who knew one another exchanged greetings, and they who had come out of the earth inquired of the others about the things above, and they who had come from heaven asked about the things below. So they discoursed with one another, some with lamentations and tears at the remembrance of all they had suffered and seen in their journey beneath the earth,-it was a journey of a thousand years,-while those from above told of heavenly delights and visions of marvelous beauty.
