BOOK IX

" If, then, what we have just said is true, he will consort with an image of pleasure thrice removed, as to truth, from the pleasure of the oligarch?"
" That is so."
" And again the oligarch is third from the royal, if we count royal and aristocratical as one? "
" Yes, the third."
" Then," said I, " the tyrant is numerically found to be thrice three times removed from true pleastire."
" So it appears."
" Then," said I, " the image of tyrannical pleasure may be considered as a plane figure in accordance with the number of its length."
" Yes, indeed."
" Now, in multiplying this length by itself, and raising it to the third power, it is easy to see by how great an interval the tyrant is distant from the king."
" Yes, to the arithmetician," he said, " it is clear."
" Now, if conversely, one wishes to determine how far the pleasurre of the king is truer than that of the tyrant, he will find after the computation that the condition of the king is seven hundred and twenty-nine (6) times more pleasant, and that of the tyrant is an equal number of times more miserable."

6 Of the many contradictory efforts to explain this fantastic mathematical calculation, the most plausible one appears to be that Plato intentionally following a somewhat playful method of reasoning, leads up to and fixes upon the cube of q as a measure of the enormous interval between the misery of the tyrant and the bliss of the philosopherking.
