" Well, then," said I, "do you think opinion is more obscure than knowledge, but more luminous than ignorance ?"
" Yes, by far."
" And does it lie within the two extremes ?"
"Yes."
" Opinion then will be the intermediate between knowledge and ignorance."
" Yes, doubtless."
" Now did we not say above(37) that if anything appeared to be of a kind which is and, at the same time, is not, such a thing would hold a place between the purely existent and the absolutely non-existent, and neither knowledge nor ignorance would correspond to it, but the faculty which should appear to be in
termediate between ignorance and knowledge?"
" That was said rightly."
" But now there has been brought to light between these two a faculty which we call opinion?"
" Yes, there has."
