CHAPTER XIX.
"I have need to be reminded, seems ; for I do not understand you perfectly."
" It were seemly," I said, "my dear Glaucon, for another to speak thus; but a man experienced in love should not forget that a person of an amorous and affectionate disposition is somehow or other stung and stirred by the presence of all who are in the flower of their age and are deemed worthy of his regard and his endearments. Or is not this the way the rest of you conduct yourselves with your favorites? Calling the youth with a snub nose agreeable, you will praise him, and the aquiline nose of another you say is princely, and another who shows the happy mean between these two extremes is, you think, admirably proportioned, the dark, you say, have a martial appearance, the fair are the children of the gods; as to the `honey pale' striplings with their name, do you believe them to be the creation of anybody else than an ardent lover who in his manner of speech idealizes his favorite, and who readily excuses paleness if it appears on the cheek of youth? And, in one word, you make all sorts of excuses and resort to every variety of expressions rather than reject any one of those who are in their season of bloom."
" If you wish, taking me for your example, to say nf lovers that they act in this way, I agree, for the sake of the argument."
" And how is it," I asked, "with those who are addicted to wine ? Do you not see that they act in this same way, and never lack a good reason for loving wines of every variety?
