For if you do not take away the true reputation on both sides, and add on the false, we shall say that you do not praise justice but the appearance of justice, and that you do not blame the act of injustice but the appearance of it, and you advise us to do wrong provided we escape detection, and you agree with Thrasymachus, who says justice is another's good, the interest of the stronger, while injustice is a man's own interest and profit, but injurious to the weaker. Since, then, you have admitted that justice belongs to the highest class of good things which are worthy of attainment both for their consequences and much more on their own account - such as sight, hearing, good sense, and especially health, and as many other good things as are genuine essentially, and not merely by repute -give your commendation to this aspect of justice which of its own intrinsic nature benefits the possessor of it, whereas injustice harms him; and leave to others the praises of rewards and reputation ; because I might endure others thus commending justice and blaming injustice, eulogizing arid reviling opinions about them and their rewards, but you I could not endure, unless you bid me, because during the whole course of your life justice has been the only object of your reflections.
