Reflecting upon the event he made trial of the ring to ascertain whether it possessed this power, and he found this to be the case, that he became invisible when he turned the collet inward, and visible when he turned it outward. After perceiving this he immediately contrived to be appointed one of the messengers to go to the king, and on his arrival he seduced the queen, and with her conspiring against the king he slew him, and seized on the kingdom. If then there were two such rings, and the just man were to put on one, and the unjust the other, no one, as it would seem, would become so adamantine, that he would remain steadfast in justice, and bring himself to abstain from touching the property of others, when it was in his power to take without fear even from the market-place whatever he liked, or to go into houses and lie with whom he would, or to kill and free from prison at his pleasure, and in everything else to conduct himself as a god among men. And in thus accomplishing his desires he would not differ at all from the other, but the just and the unjust would go the same way. And indeed, one may say, this is a strong proof that no man is just of his own free will, but under compulsion, because justice is not a good to the individual, for wherever each one thinks he can do wrong with impunity, he does wrong. And every man thinks that injustice is far more profitable to him individually than justice; and they think rightly, as he who reasons on such
