THE MOVING SAND DUNE

In no time at all the dune, dazzled by the reflections and bored by the singing, was fast asleep and had stopped moving.
Then the rat said to Rock-a-bye :
" Now he's asleep, start digging behind him."
" Why?" asked Rock-a-bye. "What do I want with all that sand?"
" Well, the Sandman has made a fortune and has retired now, and no one has taken his place. Put the sand into packets and sell it to mothers whose children won't go to bed. It is the best way to make them sleepy; you just throw a bit of sand in their eyes."
" Goodness me, I ought to have thought of that before," said Rock-a-bye. "It's a lot easier than rocking them to sleep with lullabies and fairy stories. I often send myself to sleep, and sometimes I snore so loudly that I wake the children up again ! "
