CHAPTER XXXII - A HORRIBLE PLAN

TIME had passed. It was the end of July. The wealthy owner of No. 14. Priory Terrace was in specially good fettle. He had been making some big speculations lately, and it seemed as though they were going to bring him in a rich harvest. Granted, he had lost on some of themhad perhaps let them slip through his fingers, but the best plums were now ready for gathering. One would have thought that July gist was Herr Durkheim's birthday from the preparations he was making. Evidently he was expecting a few carefully chosen friends to join him to-night at No. iq.. Indeed, he had prepared a great surprise for them. Oh yes ! He had played his cards very well indeed ! He chortled to himself in delight.
Glasses and champagne stood on a side table, generously spread with all manner of light refreshments -from caviare to pate de foie gras. It was, indeed, to be a celebration.
At last they came-six of them. It took a moment or two for them to remove their coats and scarves, for although the night was warm, they were all well wrapped up. The explanation of this was not far to seek, for when they entered the long low room where their host awaited them, they were seen to be wearing full-dress uniforms. Some were military and some of them naval officers-and all foreigners.
