CHAPTER XXXI - SILESIA

" Of course I have," asserted the Commander. " Come along."
As he said this, a car came dashing up the sloping road which passed by where they stood, on its way from the main road some three miles away. It was only another of the staff arriving with dispatches for the Emperor ; but as the car slowed down to turn in the gates, Molly felt she had seen the occupant somewhere before.
Without hesitating any longer now, she followed her father. It was too late. They had not got very far before there was a sudden sound of activity in the courtyard behind them. Cars were starting up and motor-horns were sounding furiously. The man in the car had given the alarm !
" We'll cut over this parkland," her father said, stung into sensibility by the emergency of the moment. " They cannot follow across it in their motor-cars. Curse it," he cried, looking up. " There's another of the devils arriving in an aeroplane !"
Molly looked up. Far away above her, she could see the plane her father had spotted. It seemed to be coming down at the castle, for it was making everdecreasing circles as it sank lower and lower. How her heart was beating ! If only this had been a friend instead of a foe ! But she gave all up as lost as she watched its approach. Before long the plane was on the ground, taxi-ing towards them. It had made a perfect landing.
" Damned good work," said the Commander admiringly. " I only wish it was a British machine. It might have saved us. By Jupiter," he cried. " It is a British machine ! "
To their great amazement a man leaped out of the plane as it slowed down near to them.
" Come on, Molly," a voice cried. " We've only got a few seconds to spare."
