CHAPTER XXVIII - THE PLANS AGAIN

sounded eerily through the night air. It stung the half-witted Russian into action. Had not his orders been printed on his brain by the will of the Master ? There came a tap at the door and he cautiously peeped through the slit provided. Evidently satisfied, he undid the lock and let the man come in. Not a word was spoken, but he indicated by a movement of the head that the visitor was to go upstairs.
The man who had found his way into this den of horror, paused just for a moment when he found that his weird guide was remaining below. Then hesitatingly he continued his way. Never, in all his experience, had he been given such a mission as this. He had often been compelled to do things which required delicacy and tact, and occasionally tremendous courage-but never had he been forced to descend to such squalor and beastliness. He was at home all right in palaces and castles-was perfectly confident and possessed in the presence of kings and queens ; but this . . . !
Yet the man he expected to see was himself the son of a king-a grand duke by birth and heritage !
" Himmel !" he growled to himself, as he stumbled up the dark stairs which were so rotten that they could not even creak. " What a man will do for revenge ! "
" Come right up, Von Holberg," cried a voice. " You are nearly there."
Then a door opened and a light shone out. In front of him was the man he had come hundreds of miles to see-a man with a twisted face !
