CHAPTER XXIV - ROYSTON GOES ABROAD

Royston. "You are English then," he added, to break the ice still more, as he lighted his well-worn pipe.
" No, m'sieu," smiled the other. But he did not say what his nationality was. " You are going far ?"
" I represent a big daily paper in London," said Royston, carefully hiding his real purpose-as he always did on such occasions. " And my editor has had the happy idea of sending me over to see the big Manoeuvres of the Austrian Army next week."
The old man shot a piercing look from under heavylidded eyes.
" Do you mean the ones at Serajevo ?" he asked. " But they are not next week, m'sieu. They begin to-morrow morning ! "
It was a great shock to Royston to hear this. Wonderful though the knowledge of the Foreign Minister had been, he had evidently not been informed accurately about the date of the review-and Royston had less than twelve hours to get there and find out everything and try to locate the two assassins ! It was horrible !
His travelling companion must have noticed his distress.
" Bad luck, m'sieu," he said, putting his hand on
Royston's knee. " But how was your editor to know the Emperor would alter his plans at the last moment, and put the review forward to the 28th ?"
It was the 27th to-day-Royston knew that very well. But a strange fact had registered itself on his mind. The hand which the doddering old man had laid on his knee so sympathetically for a few seconds,
had been the hand of a man in the very Prime of life !
