CHAPTER XXII - THE MASTER STRIKES A BLOW

realised that the boat had waited within the very zone which was under the eddy's influence. Now, eager though he was to find Molly, he had not thought of connecting her disappearance with the coming of a foreign destroyer. So just for a moment he saw no significance in this. Then, somehow or other, he realised that this was the same night that Molly had disappeared. With growing amazement he began to play with the idea that now came into his mind, and to piece it together. The boat had lain at anchorage within the current's power-a motor-boat had put off to it, and the coastguard who reported it had thought he saw a woman (he had the report now before him) -then the box containing Molly's tragic message for help had been found shortly after ! Gerry's brain reeled.-It could not possibly mean that Molly had been carried off in a German torpedo boat destroyer ? The idea was preposterous ! Yet, as he carefully examined the chart again, he was forced to admit that there must be some truth in it, for the channel which the Ostend boat would have used went nowhere near the patch of water influenced by the eddy.
But the question which worried him more than anything was : What possible connection could harmless girl like Molly have with the great navy of the German Empire ? And what was behind it all? This apparent discovery, however speculative and wild it may seem, was one that called for further investigation. So that very day he sent off a long message in code to General Mason, the Chief of Scotland Yard.
A horrible thought was at the back of his mind that the father of the girl he loved better than life itself, was a traitor in the pay of a foreign power. Here would seem to be direct proof of it. And then again, there had been all that strange behaviour regarding the plans, followed by his complete disappearance with them,

Whatever happened now, they must get those plans back.
And Gerry believed he could find them if he could only put his hand on that fiend in human guise-the Master.
