CHAPTER XXII - THE MASTER STRIKES A BLOW

MEANWHILE Number 77 had left the derelict house on the Gateshead side of the river, and made his way to Eldon Square. He had only lingered behind for an hour to prepare his plans ; and it was now very dark. He had memorised his way to the house and how to get inside, from the minute details the Master had described ; and he found no difficulty at all in opening the great door with the key he had been given. Soon he stood within. There was hardly any need for precaution, because he knew that no one was about, and he was quite safe from any outside interference. Anyone would have seen that he was undoubtedly in a state of excitement. His chance had come at last ! He had waited a long time for such an opportunity as this. Now, at last, he would have the precious plans of the submarinebut not for the Master-nor for the Prussian War Machine-but for himself. He knew where to take those plans and make use of them ! It was strange how the Master with all his cleverness had put this chance in his way-the Master who claimed to know their very thoughts ! Well ! he had not known these thoughts at any rate.
