CHAPTER XXI - THE COMMANDER DISAPPEARS

"No, I didn't, sir," answered Brewer. He was watching Gerry now as he fished in his pockets for something. At last he found it.
" Look at that," lie said, holding out two slips to Brewer.
" They are the same, sir," said Brewer, surprised. " Yes !" said Gerry, " because they are evidently from the same machine."
" So the Master sent the f500 to the Commander," said Brewer meaningly.
But Gerry made no reply. Things were getting dangerous.
There was only one thing left-and that Gerry decided to do at once. ...

Meanwhile, a casual observer would have noticed that a change was rapidly taking place in the den of thieves at Bottle Bank ; and Seventy-seven seemed to know the reason why. But now they kept on getting strange letters which enticed them away--some by promise of gain, some by actual threats. They never knew who sent those letters, but in every case the writer seemed completely familiar with their past-what could they do but obey ? So they left the den near the river-side.
