CHAPTER XXI - THE COMMANDER DISAPPEARS

" All right, sir," said the maid, with a coy glance at the rather incensed detective.

" What do you make of all this ?" he asked Brewer.
" Well, sir," said he, " apart from those plans, it doesn't seem to promise well for the Commander. How could he get away without being seen ? Is he lying dead somewhere ? Can he have had a fit or something ? "
" For goodness' sake be sensible," said Gerry shortly " If he had done any of those things, his body would be here."
