CHAPTER XX - MISSING PLANS

The man hesitated no longer, and very soon Gerry stood in the sunlit office of the general manager himself.
Gerry knew, very well, that he would have to go very carefully. He could not prove anything, so far, against the Commander ; and his idea of arresting him was still one he would have to work out.
" Hullo, Gerry," greeted Sir Horace, surprised at his visitor.
" How are you ?" asked Gerry, who knew that the other was as yet unaware of his real mission. " I've got a surprise for you, Sir Horace," he said, coming to the point at once.
Then he explained his connection with the Yardmuch to the engineer's surprise. He told him as much as he thought necessary about the Commander, and certain of the other things which had caused so much upset lately.
Sir Horace was tremendously alarmed at the idea of someone seeking so assiduously to learn his firm's secrets.
" You got the two fellows who broke into Gill's, didn't you ?" he demanded. " And you think that there was someone behind them ? Someone who was responsible for the business in Finch's office and the strong-room-and now you say he is after the submarine plans ? We'll see Butler about them in a minute ; but meanwhile, what about the Commander ? "
Gerry told him something of the queer ways he had got into lately, and of his strange behaviour at home.
" I noticed it myself," said Sir Horace, when he had finished. " He works too late. I spoke to him about it and now he takes his work home."
" You don't mean to say that Commander Finch takes the plans of his gun home with him," gasped Germ
" Yes !".ra.pped out Sir Horace. " And why not ?"
