CHAPTER XIX - THE EMPEROR MAKES A SUGGESTION

GERRY'S face was a study as the truth dawned upon him. Here was direct evidence of the mysterious man whose foul plans were leaving a trail of horror and death wherever he went. However, it was one thing to find his secret room, but it was another business to prove his identity.
" But do you think that this ` Master ' and Bernotte the Swede are one and the same man ? " demanded Brewer, when Gerry explained his difficulty.
Gerry did not answer. His brain felt dead. Just for the moment he could not collect himself. Idly his eyes wandered about the room, as his thoughts sought to take shape. They stopped at a typewriter in the corner.
" That's not English," he said absently. Then for no reason that he could ever fathom he went over to the machine and inserted a piece of paper between the rollers. It must have been some reflex of his mind which caused it, for he found himself tapping the keys with his forefinger. Suddenly he stopped and looked at what he had typed :
" For the Holiday Fund," he read.
Then he realised what had drawn him over to the machine.
Ever since Molly Finch had unburdened her troubles to him over the 'phone, the night she left for Brussels so unexpectedly, he had wondered what that gift to the Commander had meant. People do not give big
