CHAPTER XVIII - THE MASTER'S LAIR

like that. If he could only drag out the name from his subconscious mind !
And Molly !
What new danger was this which threatened her ? What object could anyone possibly have in taking her away against her will ? And where had she gone ?
Then again, why should the box, with its pathetically mute appeal, be found on that same strip of sand with such sinister memories ? He could not find an answer anywhere.
So it was a very determined young man who was joined by Brewer at the house in Eldon Square about eleven o'clock that night.
" We have everything we want, I suppose," said Gerry, pulling on some tennis shoes which had been blacked over.
" Yes, I think so," was the reply. " Though I don't quite see how you are going to get into the house," he added.
Gerry smiled at him knowingly.
" You'll see in a moment or two," he said.
Fortunately for them it was quite dark. The night was cloudy and the moon obscured. Softly opening the French-window Gerry stepped out of the library into the darkness of the garden, Brewer following closely. Keeping near to the shadow of the house, they worked their way slowly along to the next-door block which was joined on to the building they had just left. Not a light showed in the place. It seemed as dead and deserted as a tomb.
Brewer shivered slightly. The night was damp and chilly, but he was a bit uneasy. It was a new experience to this man from Scotland Yard to attempt to break into someone's house ! If their plans went wrong, he wondered what would happen? They had no search warrant and they might get shot in mistake for real thieves !
