CHAPTER XVII - THINGS HAPPEN !

eyes and chase the horrible blank expression from his face. But it only lasted a few fleeting seconds. Then it vanished, leaving only that terrible unseeing look in its place.
Molly was terrified. Where were they going ? Whose power were they in ? And, with her father in such a dreadful state, how were they to find protection in this strange land ?
Fortunately the French maid had been a great comfort all the time, and at this moment she appeared with Molly's things for the journey.
" Where are we going, Marie ?" she demanded.
" M'selle has asked an impossible question," was the answer. " For I do not know. But wrap up well, m'selle. I heard them talking of a long railway journey."
" But, Marie, where is this place ? What country are we in ? Cannot you tell me that ?" cried Molly in desperation.
" Mais non, m'selle," the girl replied. " But I know it is not France ! "
With this, Molly had to be content ; and, strange though her father was, she was glad they were both together. It was quite plain to her now, that his unhappy ways were entirely due to the state of his health and mind-that, whatever was wrong, was not of his own seeking-or his own fault. So all the fears that she had of some horrible conspiracy left her, and her sole anxiety on his account now was for the condition of his health. It was clear he did not fully realise ~'hat was happening. All the same, she felt that there was a deep-laid scheme behind this astonishing journey-though she had yet to learn what it was.
" I'm sorry, madame." It was the man she had last seen as she boarded the ship two nights ago. " But I must again resort to this scarf. It will only be for a moment or so."
