CHAPTER XIV - A TALL SHIP

Her early days of yachting with her father stood her in good stead now, and nimbly climbing the precarious ladder, she was soon standing on the dark deck. It was almost impossible to see anything or even locate the position of the ship. But all efforts to do anything of the sort were frustrated ; for, as she stepped aboard, helped by willing hands, the hateful scarf was replaced about her eyes-though not before a flash of light as from a searchlight illuminated the ship from stem to stern.
Soon she was led downstairs to a large and roomy cabin which was quite comfortably furnished, and there they locked her in. Even as she whipped off the handkerchief from her eyes, she heard the tinkle of the telegraph, and the ship began to quiver in action -they had started on their mysterious journey !
In the seclusion of her cabin Molly broke down completely. It was all so terrifying. Here she was, a lonely woman, with no one to defend her. She neither knew where she was, nor who had her in their power. She was equally ignorant as to the purpose of it all, and what the end would be. All she knew was that every beat of the engine was taking her away farther and farther from Gerry.
It was then she heard her father's voice !
