CHAPTER XIV - A TALL SHIP

She had heard this voice before-but just for the moment could not place it. The other was not slow to see that she was beginning to suspect him and he changed his tone at once. It was absolutely marvellous how he did it. The whole personality of the man seemed to change too. It was almost as though an entirely different person now inhabited that beastly black hood.
" I am sorry you have had to be treated like this," he said. " But, in a way, you have brought it on yourself. You and your friend Gerry." The voice was harsh and cruel now. " Just wait ! His turn will come."
He said this with such a horrible leer in his voice that Molly felt all her terror return. What horrible thing was he planning for Gerry ?
" What has he done ?" gasped Molly.
'He knows too much," was the answer. "But please do not be concerned-I will deal with him myself." He seemed to chuckle to himself evilly. " He would spoil my plans, would he ? Well ! Two can play at his game ! "
Molly was more terrified than she had ever been in her life. This beastly man with the horrible hood and the slits with the eyes shining through-the man himself with his loathsome voice-and lastly, the dreadful threat he held over Gerry. It was all too much ; she felt the room swimming once again, then she vaguely heard him say:
" Wrap up well. The sea will be cold."
Her faintness seemed only momentary, but she opened her eyes to find her captor pouring some wine into a glass from a bottle which had not been there before. He had removed the cork by the expedient of deftly knocking the neck of the bottle against the edge of the table. Molly who felt very shaky, drank it thankfully ; and in a few moments she had recovered
