CHAPTER XI - MOLLY !

not long before he was seeking to get through to her. But the sleepy man in the Exchange seemed to find difficulty in getting the connection. After a lot of clicking in his ear which nearly burst his eardrums, punctuated by long pauses of silence, the operator informed him that he could get no reply.
" But I've just been speaking to them, Exchange," he asserted positively.
" Sorry-no reply," was the unfeeling answer.
" Try again," Gerry pleaded.
Again the clicking and the silence.
" Sorry-no reply," came the automatic voice.
Gerry slowly put down the receiver. A definite feeling gradually came over him that something was wrong. He could hardly believe that, after the anxious talk they had had, Molly would be so unfeeling as to go to bed without putting his mind at rest. No ! There was something very serious at the root of the matter. He began to fret and fidget. It was getting unbearable. Should he get out his car and go down to her ? It was nearly midnight. What about ringing up the Colonel-he was never an early bird ? He might be just having his last " spot " of whisky before turning in.
No sooner thought-of, than done-Gerry was quickly at the end of the wire again, arousing the irritated young gentleman at the telephone exchange by his insistent ringing.
"Hullo ! Hullo !" came the Colonel's voice, before long.
" It's me, Colonel," said Gerry ungrammatically. Then he explained his trouble.
Why' certainly, my boy," came the Colonel's cheery voice. " I'll go along at once. You can hang on_ I won't be three minutes."
Gerry had quietened down a bit now. At least he would be assured that all was well. Though he could

not help thinking how unlike Molly this inconsiderate behaviour was. Of course, it would be the Commander's fault. He would have come in and packed her off to bed without any thoughts for him waiting there. But Gerry was not satisfied with his own explanation-it did not ring true !
" I say, Gerry "-it was the Colonel once more" I've been down and aroused the house. The Commander isn't back yet-and Molly has completely disappeared."
