why is he so careless ? " The windows swung silently open at his deft touch even as he spoke.
" Oh ! He won't think that anyone would try to steal such things in the twentieth century," laughed Taylor quietly. " I know Sir Robert. He has great faith in modern civilisation-and the police! "
" Well ! We'll show him," growled Henrotin, who but faintly appreciated his confederate's sense of humour. " Where did you not look for the safe ?"
They were inside the room now, and Taylor was pointing out the places he had examined for traces of the safe.
" I wanted to look behind that bookcase," he said, " but I couldn't move it by myself."
Henrotin was the cleverer of the two men by a long way. He went over to the bookcase and examined it silently but thoroughly.
Suddenly he gave a grunt of satisfaction and began to, fiddle inside the corner of one of the shelves. Not finding what he sought, he tried another.
" What are you doing ?" asked Taylor anxiously.
" Well, the bookcase is on hinges ; and the top half swings out on that left pivot-look," was the answer of the expert.
Taylor looked where he pointed and saw that there were carefully concealed hinges on the left side of the bookcase.
" But where is the catch to release the bookcase ?" he asked.
" I don't know," said the other impatiently. " I'm afraid it's more ~difficult than I thought. I believe there's an electric contrivance which time-locks it."
" I thought it was a bit too easy," growled Taylor. " But," he said, suddenly thinking of something, surely a time-lock would be fearfully inconvenient for a safe like this, where people may want to put things in, or take them out at any time ?"
