CHAPTER XI - MOLLY !

THIS idea received a tremendous impetus when she got back home and found her father had not yet returned. It was well past eleven o'clock, and he had never stayed out like this before. So, late though it was, she decided to ring up Gerry Dalton and ask his advice. That horrible scream of a man in agony still rang in her ears and she was absolutely unnerved.
Fortunately, Gerry had just got in when she 'phoned him.
" I'll ring through to the works and see if he has left," he said, as soon as she explained her anxiety. A feeling akin to dread came over him when he heard her message-he was thinking of that other affair at the Commander's office. " Meanwhile don't be afraid," he said.
" I can't help it, Gerry," Molly replied, and there was a sob in her voice. " Listen ".
And she told him about the Commander's strange behaviour since she had returned home ; of his short temper and secretive ways. Then she went on to tell him of her impressions of the evening. She did not hesitate to speak of her hatred of Mr. Durkheim, with his horrid woolfish teeth ; or how the house with its dim lights had affected her. Then she told him of the cry she had heard.
" But didn't he hear it too? " Gerry asked, amazed.
" Well, he pretended not to."
