CHAPTER X - A CRY IN THE NIGHT

She looked at him. Was he joking-or not ? These pictures were exquisite works of art. The richness of colour-the depths of light and shade were most intriguing ; and Molly, who knew a bit about painting, recognised a completely new style of technique he had adopted in many of his pictures.
" They are simply marvellous," she said. And she meant it.
All her fear had left her. A man who could paint like this could never surely be the monster she had already imagined him.
It was as though he understood her change towards him :
" Miss Molly," he said, suddenly pausing before a painting. " I would like to be your friend. Somehow or other I have a feeling that you dislike me. No !" he said, holding up his hand as she would have protested, " spare me that, please ! You don't need to deny it. But try to think of me as someone who seeks your friendship. Now," he went on, changing the subject abruptly, " where is our young friend Gerry Dalton to-night ? I planned this party specially for him-and you, of course," he added smilingly.
" I have no idea, Mr. Durkheim," she replied quite truthfully. " He promised he would come ; then at the last moment telephoned to say he could not get away." She was intrigued by this man. Was it anger or just impatience that made his red lips twist like that, she wondered.
" I suppose he has suddenly been put on a case," said this strange man.
" Oh no ! I don't think so," said Molly, wondering what he meant-she was not in the secret about Gerry's work. " you see he is on holiday."
" I hope you are right," he said ; and Molly thought it sounded a funny thing to say. " But we came to see my paintings," he went on, " and this is my best
