It seems incredible that he should willingly have anything to do with these things he seems to be mixed up with. The only obvious inference is that someone is working behind him-using him as a blind. If we shut him up on suspicion, we will lose all chance of getting at the real culprit."
Brewer nodded his head again, in admiration. This young man was " hot stuff."
" What have we to go upon ?" resumed Gerry. " The Commander is supposed to have been seen (and by myself, mind you!) on each occasion before those two men were killed on the beach at Tynemouth. Yet, each time, he had an undeniable alibi. It is just likely that on this last occasion too, a mistake was made."
" Then there is someone going about who is very like him," said Brewer.
" Yes ! Or who is disguised to look like him," said Gerry slowly.
