CHAPTER VIII - A DOUBLE TRAGEDY

For a few moments there was deathly silence in the room ; and Gerry felt his heart racing furiously within him. Who had done this foul thing ? Suddenly he caught sight of something. Stooping down quickly, he opened the man's clenched right hand-there was a tuft of wiry hair in it.
" What's that? " asked the Sergeant. " It's tough looking hair, isn't it. What's it off-a dog ?"
" No ! A man's beard," said Gerry thoughtfully. At that same moment there was a step outside.
It was one of the men who had been on duty upstairs.
` Seen this, Sergeant ?" he asked, handing the officer a pad of forms.
They were printed slips which had to be filled in by everyone who wished to pass the doorkeepers of these works of such vital importance to the Nation's safety. The Sergeant glanced down at it quickly. Then he gasped. Again he read the writing carefully. Then he took the pad and put it in his pocket.
" We must go upstairs now-there is nothing more we can do here," he said. " Leave this poor fellow," he ordered, " and lock the door. There is no trace of anyone having attempted to open the strong-room." It was noticeable that he did not ask the Commander's opinion this time.
" I want a word with you, sir," he said quietly to Gerry, as the other two made their way to the stairs nearby. " Look at that."
Gerry took the pad. Evidently Panton had conscientiously done his job right to the bitter end ; but he was not prepared for what he read. The form had been filled in as follows :

Time. 8.50.
Name. Commander Finch.
Business. Said left keys in room ; had to open his door.
