CHAPTER VIII - A DOUBLE TRAGEDY

" There are stairs too, of course," the Commander informed them. " But this is quicker."
The lift stopped and they stepped out. Now the place was lighted up by small electric lamps, and a light was shining from a door at the end of the long corridor. As if surprised at this, the Commander gave a start of alarm ; but the others did not notice it.
" He must be awake," said their guide. " That's the ante-room to the strong-room-the one lighted up."
Suddenly an uncanny groan echoed along the corridor ; and with a shout of alarm the Commander started to run towards the room, with Gerry and the Sergeant close on his heels. Then they suddenly stopped dead !
A terrible sight met their eyes. A man lay on the floor just inside the room and his hands clutched at a knife which still stuck in his chest. He was evidently pretty near his last breath and there was a look of absolute horror on his face. There were many signs of a struggle ; and, as they deftly removed the deadly knife and lifted his head from the concrete floor, his eyes opened. When he caught sight of the policeman his lips moved gently and some words came softly out. Then he saw the Commander. With a great effort he started up in the Sergeant's arms. All the horror came back into his eyes and he tried to speak again, but the effort was too much for him. . . He fell back dead in the policeman's arms. ...
