CHAPTER IV - THE COMMANDER'S SECRET

IT was all very well for the Commander to adopt this superior attitude towards his friend ; but, as a matter of fact, he really did it as a reaction to identically the same fear himself. Ever since he had been specially seconded from Active Service for the work, he had been at Thomson-Wentworth's-the huge firm of battleship builders and big ordnance makers-where his special job was to design naval guns.
For some months now he had been at work on a special scheme. A new battleship was to be built, bigger than anything of its kind afloat-and a special feature was to be her guns. The secret had leaked out (in that mysterious way such secrets have) and the whole of Europe was on the tiptoe of anxiety. If this new ship Queen Mab was going to revolutionise naval warfare, it was important that they should learn what her new possibilities were. With the world simply spoiling for war, no nation could afford to overlook so important a factor as Queen Mab !
But though this new mistress of the seas was being built almost under his very nose, Commander Finch was not anxious on her account. He had his own worries,I tremendous gun with the extraordinary calibre of 18 inches which could actually hurl a huge armourPiercing shell the terrific distance of twenty-five miles ! This was his secret, and it was his alone ! No one but this quiet chubby little man with the twinkling blue
