CHAPTER III - THE BODY ON THE SANDS

" Carry on, Corporal," he said. "But no other permits have been issued ; so report at once if there is anything more of this sort."
Next morning, however, brought no light on the matter, and the Colonel, who was responsible for the fortifications, was considerably worried. Nor was his anxiety relieved when the Commander rang him up shortly before nine-thirty.
" I say, Colonel," he asked, in an excited voice, " did you find out who that man was last night ?"
" No !" grunted the Colonel, rather annoyed that the Commander should get a dig at him. " I haven't been down to Orderly Room yet."
" Well, I've got some news," said the other more calmly now. "The coastguard told me early this morning, that very late last night a man's body was found on the sands at Frenchman's Haven."
" What! " yelled the Colonel, suddenly all excitement.
" Yes! " was the reply. " There is a small bruise at the base of the skull, which may, or may not, have been the cause of death. Of course, he was more probably drowned. But we'll have to wait for the Coroner's inquest for that."
" Good heavens, Finch," gasped the Colonel. " Murder !-Spies ! "
The Commander smiled to himself tolerantly.
But for once the Colonel was right on both points !
