CHAPTER III - THE BODY ON THE SANDS

" Whoever can it be? " demanded Lord Tankerton in absolute amazement. " Does he know about the subterranean channel ? "
" That's the strange part of it all," said Sir Charles. " He knows all about it-and doesn't mind a bit ! By the way, my clerk says he seems to be a foreigner. You don't mind, do you ?"
" Not at all," said his lordship. " I am only too thankful he wants to buy it ! It will help us to tide over a little longer. But I say," he added, " won't Gerry be amused ? It's just like one of those ` detective stunts '-as he calls them."
Gerald Dalton was Lord Tankerton's only son. As we shall see later, he had chosen the rather original course of entering the Diplomatic Service by way of Scotland Yard. It was his idea that a few years with the Special Foreign Branch would help him to understand the work that goes on behind the scenes.
" Well, now! " went on Lord Tankerton. " What about the Rothbury Estates ? "
Soon they were concentrated on other business, and Priory Terrace and Gerry and the Secret Service all faded into the background.

There was great excitement when the new tenant moved into No. 14 Priory Terrace, a few months later. Immediately the sale had been completed, a veritable army of workmen and painters had invaded the place and taken charge. These were followed in turn by a succession of vans from Newcastle, about fifteen miles away ; and before long, the house was ready for its new owner. Of course, it was only to be expected that local " Society " should not waste much time before calling, and it must be stated that they came away enchanted both by the house and its ne's occupant.
