CHAPTER III - THE BODY ON THE SANDS

SPRING 1913 had begun in real earnest. Birds were chirruping in busy excitement as they put the finishing touches to their homes. And the man who stood gazing from his library window across a magnificent vista of parkland, thought he had never seen it look more beautiful than it did today. The centuries-old lawns rolling away from immediately before the windows had taken on a new and brighter hue, the budding leaves on the trees made the distant woods look as though they had been covered with a filmy veil of delicate green, and the air was clear and bright-bringing with it a sense of newness and freshness which stirred the blood.
Lord Tankerton sighed a little as he turned away. He was rather worried this morning. In a short time his agent would be here to discuss a very serious matter of business. Somehow or other, things had not been very prosperous on his estates for the last few years ; and the previous summer of 1912 had been disastrous to many of the farmers on his land. Now the time had arrived when something had to be done. They would never face another year like the last-and who could say what 1913 would bring?
Yes ! Something must go ! But what . .? He had recently checked very carefully over his properties to see which he could force himself to spare more easily than the rest, and finally, after a lot of mental suffering, decided that it must be some of his Tynemouth Estate.
