CHAPTER I - A MYSTERIOUS AFFAIR

"Then you aye mad," said the other ; but he shivered as he remembered how near they had been to a horrible death. And the wolves might come back-they could not be very far away.
The approaching train was slowing down now, and in a few moments was drawing up in the station. It was too late now for them to chase after the stranger, and they could only hope that he had disappeared in the same mysterious way that he had come. Meanwhile, they decided to obey orders as far as they possibly could. The blinds were hastily drawn down, and they remained inside their office. But, as the great train with its two powerful engines panted and grunted to a standstill, Heinrich raised the corner of the blind slightly. What he saw gave him food for a lot of thought.
The coaches were brilliantly lighted up, and he could see that their interior was magnificently appointed. For the moment, he could distinguish no sign of the weird stranger. Then, all at once, his heart beat faster. The lonely fur-clad figure was standing in the light that streamed from a coach more brilliantly lighted than the rest. Even as he looked, he saw a smart young officer step out of the train and click his heels in a military salute as he bowed to the silent man. The stranger responded distantly, and, evidently acting on the invitation of the officer, climbed aboard the train. A tall military figure was standing in the gaily lit coach, waiting to greet him ; and the amazed Heinrich recognised his face.
As the corner of the blind fell from his trembling grasp, he whispered the news to his excited companion.
` It was the Emperor himself !" he gasped.
