the horror of it all, the petrol tank exploded, and flames began to complete the toll of death already well begun. . . .
But in the terrific impact one man had been thrown clear ; and he now lay in the covering night, just at the other side of the hedge. Consciousness was a long time in coming back to him. When it did, he realised that there was great excitement over on the roadway. For a little while he could not remember what had happened. Then in a whirl of horror it all came back to him. He realised that he, a fugitive-one whose very life was forfeit-lay there helplessly, quite unable to escape ! In his agony he could picture all his carefully laid plans crumbling away into nothing ; all his calculations set at naught by Fate. . . ! But as he waited, gripping his hands in agony and suspense, there came all at once a tiny ray of hope !
" Well, there's not much left of that little crew."
There was a man over on the roadway speaking.
He could not move his head for infinite pain ; but he knew some people were looking at the wreckage of the car. The fire had evidently exhausted itself by now, for he could see no glow of flames.
"Yes, Inspector," said another voice. " But who were they ? "
" Oh, a foreign grand duke or something. There's a great hue and cry for him back in Cambridge. He's wanted for murder and all sorts of other things."
" Funny thing for a grand duke to do," was the comment.
" Yes ! But this one was after very big game. He had actually managed to kidnap young Prince Carl of Bulkrania from Magdalen College in hopes of getting the crown for himself."
" I suppose something came to spoil his plans ?" ventured the other.
