THE HISTORY OF THE PLAY

The source of Shakespeare's play was a short story from the Hecatornmithi, a collection of tales brought out in 1565 by an Italian named Giovanni Battista Giraldi, more often called Cinthio. Whether Shakespeare could read Italian nobody knows, but the Hecatommithi was widely known in England and was used by other dramatists. If he could not read it himself, he could learn the outline of the story from someone who could translate it. The story is from that section of the collection dealing with "The Unfaithfulness of Husbands and Wives," a fruitful place for an Elizabethan to look for a plot. In the original, the only character given a name is Disdemona, a wife described as very beautiful and virtuous. The origin of the name Othello is obscure. Iago of course is an Italian form of James. Shakespeare gave his characters names that he supposed to be typically Italian as befitted the setting of his play.
