A PRINCE OF NEUROTICS : AELIUS ARISTIDES

I had slept, following some dream-vision, between the main gates and the folding doors of the temple, and the god sent me the following oracle :
The evening brought them strength by grassy springs. Then I anointed myself in the open air in the temple precinct, and washed at the sacred well, and those who saw me could not believe their eyes. I had almost completely shaken off my illness ; but when the god indicated by signs a change of treatment and I myself was ready to comply,
The evil counsel of my friends prevailed,
who, claiming to be scientific and appearing to possess some capacity in this direction, interpreted my dreams in an unnatural way and emphatically declared that the god indicated that I should persevere in the same treatment. I yielded against my will, full of suspicion and thinking that I knew better, but not wishing to seem to listen to nobody except myself. Experience gave me a fine lesson that my judgement was right. But enough of my advisers' blunders : though even these were an additional testimony to the god. For the fact that the same treatment and the same things, when I was under the guidance of the god and his explicit instructions, brought well-being, strength, a sense of lightness, ease, cheerfulness, and everything that was best for body and soul, but, when I took the advice of others who had not hit the god's meaning, had precisely the opposite effect-this surely is the greatest evidence of the god's power.

In Marius the Epicurean Pater describes the priest of Asclepius coming to the bedside of the patient and giving him the kind of advice which Pater no doubt gave his pupils. But there is no trace of such methods in Aristides. The treatment is mixed : baths and exercise ; bleeding and reducing processes ; prescriptions which do not excite our confidence ; a diet mainly wholesome and light, though at times surprising
