A PHILOSOPHIC MISSIONARY - DION CHRYSOSTOM

were my hosts, and that they did not miss the full pleasure even of food and drink, and indeed were abundantly provided. We were very comfortable, when my friend's fellow arrived, with his son, a fine youth, who carried a hare. He blushed on entering, and while his father was greeting us he kissed the girl and gave her the hare. The girl stopped serving and sat down by her mother, the youth taking her place. I asked the stranger : ` Is this the girl you mentioned ?' ` No,' he said. 'That one married a rich man in the village long ago, and has big children.' ` Do not they provide you with what you want ?' I asked. ` We want nothing,' the woman answered, ` but we give them fruit and vegetables and game : for they have no garden. We had some wheat from them last year, for use as seed, and paid them back that summer.' ` Well,' I said, 'are you going to marry this girl to a rich man, so that she too can lend you corn ?' But at this both the girl and the youth blushed, and her father said: ` She will take a poor man, a hunter like ourselves ;' and he looked at the youth with a smile. ` Why,' said I, ` do you not bestow her ? Or has the suitor to come from the village ?'` I fancy,' he answered, ` that he is not far off, but in the house, and we shall choose a good day and have the wedding.' ` And how,' said I, 'do you decide what is a good day ?'` When the moon is big,' he replied ;` it must be clear, bright weather.' ` I suppose,' I said, 'he is really a good hunter.' ` Yes,' replied the young man, ` I can wear down a deer and face a boar. You shall see to-morrow, stranger, if you like.' ` And did you catch this hare yourself ?' ` I did,' he replied with a smile, 'with a snare at night : for it was beautifully fine, and the moon bigger than it has ever been before.' At that we both laughed, the girl's father and the boy's. And he was ashamed and held his tongue.
But a problem arises. Where is a victim for the religious sacrifice necessary on marriage ? At this the younger brother
of the girl mentions that he has a wild boar, which he caught The young men go to fetch it.
