EPICURUS

The first element in salvation is to watch one's youth and guard against that universal defilement which follows the stings of desire.
Do nothing in your life which would cause you fear, if your neighbour came to know it.
The man who needs to-morrow least will find it most pleasant to meet.

Philosophy
THE teaching of a philosopher which cures no human suffering is vain : medicine is useless if it does not expel the diseases of the body, philosophy, if it does not expel the diseases of the soul.
Let us not delay to be philosophers in our youth or weary of it in our age. A man can never be too late or too early in pursuing spiritual health. To say that the hour to study philosophy has not yet come or that it has passed, is like saying the same of the pursuit of happiness. Young and old should study philosophy : the latter, that though old in years he may be young in blessings by grace of the past ; the former, that having no fear of the future he may be at once young and old. We must meditate on that which makes for happiness, since when happiness is present we have everything, and when it is absent we do everything to obtain it. Meditate and practise what I have always taught you and regard this teaching as the elements of a good life.

The Teaching of Nature
NATURE teaches us to rate the gifts of fortune low, in happiness to be prepared for its reverse, in misfortune not to think too highly of happiness, to accept calmly the gifts of fortune, and to be ready to face her supposed evils. It teaches that all the good and ill of the crowd is ephemeral, and that fortune has no lien on wisdom.
