Mothers Cry

to me. He was lying on his cot and he was like he was dead already.
So I sat outside and watched him for a while and then Danny got up kind of slow and he came over and he said hello ma. So I got up and I said hello Danny. And he said how are you ma. And I said I'm all right Danny how are you. He said I'm all right. Then he said how much did they soak you for the trial ma and I said everything I got for the house Danny but I said don't be thinking of that Danny.
Then he stood there and he didn't say anything for a while and I didn't say anything. And he said ma. And I said what is it Danny. And he said I ain't afraid ma. So I said I'm glad Danny. So he said them goddam newspaper guys that's expectin me to flop they can go to hell because I ain't gonna flop see ma? So I said yes Danny. All of a sudden it came to me that Danny's hair wasn't so red as it used to be it wasn't hardly red at all it was more like light brown. And I wondered how I hadn't noticed it before. And I thought why I guess if he stayed in the sun maybe his hair would get red again because I liked red hair and I was just going to say that to him and then I remembered. The sun would never see Danny's hair again only the ground would see it. And it came to me in a new way what was going to happen to Danny and inside I felt like everything was going to fall to pieces and I couldn't stand on my feet and then the man came and said we must say good-bye now. So I said good-bye Danny and he said good-bye ma and I said it again good-bye Danny and I felt like Danny was a man I never knew and had nothing to do with. But he had been my very first baby.
And I went out and then the going to pieces began and they took me into a room to lie down and I cried and I cried and I cried like I hadn't cried since when they buried Beatty. I
