Mothers Cry

me get up and tell all about the things Danny did when he was growing up always stealing and all. But the district attorney made me tell about the gun in the drawer. Everybody was lovely to me in the court room and nobody made it hard except the little papers that were always taking the pictures. The district attorney he was especially nice to me. He helped me to get up in the witness stand and he spoke to me as nice as he could only he made me say all the things that Danny's lawyer didn't want me to say and when I got down everybody sort of was crying and carrying on. I hardly knew anything that was happening because I couldn't understand hardly what they were saying.
Danny didn't go up to say anything at all. He looked terrible. He was all grey in his face and he limped all the time from where the policeman had shot him in the leg when he was trying to run away. I knew he was getting good things to eat but one of his friends told me they couldn't get his pipe to him. So I said wouldn't they let him smoke but the friend laughed and said not what Danny's used to smoking. So I said was he very upset and he said yes but he was getting over it he said he was sweating a lot less nights now and was beginning to eat better. Danny wouldn't talk to me or to anybody at all ever all through the trial. He just sat like a lump.
In the nights when I couldn't sleep I would think of Danny all alone too and not sleeping and sweating because he couldn't get the kind of a pipe he needed and wondering if he was going to die and lying maybe afraid to breathe because he was so afraid he was going to die and I felt sometimes I couldn't stand it it was like I was going to die myself. And whenever I wanted to see him he said no.
But nothing helped and they found him guilty of first
