I got the house all fixed and ready with holly and green stuff and I took out all the old furniture that used to be in the girls' room and I asked Alice to help me and she fixed the room up with a couch that had a beautiful cover and beautiful cushions on it and a little red chest of drawers and Artie designed a kind of bookcase that was on both sides of the bed and had a shelf on top across the bed and the bookcase was like some of his buildings sort of uneven with pieces cut out in funny places and Alice put some Japanese prints on the wall and bought two small rugs and some plain lamps and some funny animals in china and put cretonne hangings up and lots of little bright things around the room and it really looked lovely though I didn't think it was going to at first because everything she used was so plain.
I told Artie and Alice to meet Beatty at the boat on Christmas Day when it was coming because I wanted to be getting dinner ready.
I thought that morning would never come to end but at last it did and I could hear them coming in through the alley at the side of the house straight to the kitchen but I couldn't move I just stood there. I guess I didn't even have enough sense to take my apron off but when I saw Beatty coming in the kitchen door it didn't make any difference and
