Mothers Cry

went home and after Alice helped me to undress I went right to sleep and all I knew about the whole thing was that everybody had been saying how clever and smart Artie had been especially when he was so young.
The next morning Artie said he didn't have to go down to the office because there was a board meeting and he was to hear what the firm were going to do for him. But he said mother I'm going to take you down to see my buildingmy first baby so to speak.
Oh Artie I said all those roofs.
But Artie laughed and he said I'm only going to show you the outside. We'll just sit nice and quietly on a bench in Washington Square Park and you won't have to take a step or go on a single roof. So I felt better.
We went down by bus but Artie made me shut my eyes when we passed the hotel because he said he wanted me to get a complete picture all at once and even when we got o$ the bus he made me keep my eyes on the ground until he sat me down on a bench and then he said now open. And I did and at first I couldn't see anything but just a terrible lot of white with sort of colors going upwards. Then I looked for a long long time and I felt just like the colors going upwards and upwards and upwards and as if I was very tall and very straight and very beautiful and a grand grand lady. And when I looked closer I could see how in between the big white stones were sort of bricks in light colors and they were put in such a way that they kept going upwards and upwards all the time. And then I saw why there were so many roofs. Artie had cut out so many pieces in different places and wherever he cut out a piece there was a roof left and as the building went higher and higher it got sort of smaller and smaller and sort of melted away in the sky.
