Mothers Cry

her so much. So I told her no I'd never try to interfere with her babies because they were such fun and I wouldn't want to steal her pleasure and if she'd teach me how to diaper on the square I'd be a willing pupil if only she'd let me do it once in a while. And then she told me how Artie had told her all about me and so she was prejudiced before she met me.
Afterwards we went out together downtown to the big stores where I never was before because Landry's was the biggest shop I ever was in and we bought a light green silk dress and it didn't have any sleeves and no back or front so I said I couldn't wear it like that and Alice said yes I could because I had lovely arms and a lovely back. Why you're beautiful she said. But I made her get them to put a piece of lace in the front and the back and I didn't like the big diamond buckle on but Alice made me keep it on. That she said is the penalty for being the mother of a genius. And then she bought me some gold slippers and gold stockings and a silk sort of something to wear under my dress and some narrow velvet light green ribbon to put in my hair to match the dress.
Tuesday night was the night of the party and Alice came up to the house for me in her uncle's automobile and she had flowers for me to wear and she brought a lady with her to fix my hair but I guess I looked so miserable after it was fixed that Alice laughed and laughed and she said all right just fix it the way you want to but you must let me put the ribbon in and then afterwards the lady fixed my nails. Artie was so excited and he tried so hard not to show it.
We all went down together in Alice's uncle's automobile and when we were getting out a big bunch of lights flared up and gave me such a scare. Damn those photographers Alice said and she made me run quickly inside and there was a big room all lit with thousands and thousands of lights
