Mothers Cry

it was Saturday and the ice man didn't come now till Monday and I guess it was because she was so mad she could carry it. Danny was sitting in front of the ice box but he didn't move when he saw Beatty coming over with the big piece of ice. I thought oh now there's going to be a terrible fight but no Beatty said very quietly would you mind moving your chair out of the way so I can put the ice in the box. Danny was so surprised he moved his chair in and Beatty dropped the ice into the box. Then she wiped her hands on the towel and sat down to her chocolate pudding.
Danny said he guessed he and Sadye were going to stay in the house all afternoon they had something important to do. Sadye laughed and said yes something very important. So Danny said would I clean up their room right away while they were upstairs in the bathroom washing. They went in to get their clothes and after they came out I got the carpet sweeper and the broom and the oil mop and a dust rag and I went in. While I was working around Beatty came in too and after she looked all around at the room she sat down in the arm chair and watched me. I pulled up the dark shades and the room did look sort of messy because Danny and Sadye never picked up things. There was a dirty chemise and stockings in a corner and a dirty shirt and socks in another corner. I rolled them up and carried them in the kitchen to wash afterwards. Then I hung up Sadye's clothes she wasn't wearing and sort of put the room to rights. Sadye kind of liked sitting in the big arm chair or lying on top of the bed and reading magazines like Snappy Stories and Romantic Stories and books like that and eating candy and so the floor was full of the little brown cups with the crinkled edges that the candies were in and her magazines were lying all around. After I picked them up and the little brown papers I made the bed.
