When he finished he sort of sat back and pulled out his cigarettes from the pocket of his bathrobe and he lit one. Danny always let his cigarette sort of stick to his bottom lip so you could always see the wet part and if he was talking he'd leave the cigarette sticking there. I gave Danny an ash tray but he didn't pay any attention and kept putting the ashes on his plate. I always asked the boys not to put their cigarette ashes on the plate because it was so nasty to wash the plates and it made the dish water all smelly and egg plates were so hard to wash anyway. But I didn't want to say anything to Danny about the ashes because I didn't want Beatty to notice but I guess maybe she was noticing everything because she was sort of watching every move Danny was making out of the corner of her eye. I couldn't understand why she kept sitting there because always she walked out when Danny did things that made her mad.
Danny was finished eating now so I went out to get the ice because it was in the sun and it was melting.
