Mothers Cry

noon to kill time till I take the cab out tonight. Have you got a coupla dollars ma to lend me I'll give em back to you after I make some money tonight with the cab. So I gave him two dollars and they went out. I cleaned up their room and put it to rights because Sadye didn't know yet where things belonged and she left them lying around.
They came back supper time and Danny said it was a punk show and after supper Danny said he guessed now he'd take the cab out and he'd drive Sadye downtown to her girl friend and then he asked me for a dollar for gasoline and I gave him the dollar and Beatty was there and she made a funny noise like huh and Danny turned around quick on her and said yuh damn little snotnose you'd better cut that out dyuh hear. Danny I said you mustn't talk like that. Well tell her if she doesn't like it she can lump it but not around here. Who the hell does she think she is anyhow.
Beatty went up to her room without finishing her supper so after Danny and Sadye left I went up there with a sandwich and a glass of milk but when I knocked she didn't answer so I opened the door and it was dark in her room. I turned on the light and there was Beatty lying on her bed with her face in the pillow. Go away ma she said go away. Oh Beatty I said don't please don't. Everything will be all right. But Beatty kept saying go away go away go away. So I put the sandwich down and the milk and then I went into the parlor and I sat down to try to think things out to try to understand but I couldn't understand anything that was happening and it was like it was all happening so hard and so fast and I wanted to catch what was happening and hold it and stop it but I couldn't get hold because it didn't have a shape yet.
Danny and Sadye didn't come home till it was nearly four o'clock in the morning.
