Mothers Cry

Twenty-One
THE next day I went out with Sadye to buy a bedroom set. We got one in grey enamel with a wooden bed a nice dresser and a nice chifferobe and a little vanity table and I put light blue oatmeal paper on the wall and painted the woodwork white and blue curtains in the window and I made a blue bedspread and blue covers for the dresser and the chifferobe and the vanity. I bought a little lamp and made a blue shade for it and a big mahogany lamp with a big dark red shade on it and a big blue armchair. Sadye said the room looked awfully pretty and Danny said ma it's simply great and I was so glad and happy because everything was turning out so fine and I kept thinking how Sadye was going to have Danny's baby and I thought how nice it would be we could put the baby in the back garden where there was such a lot of sun and it would be oh so lovely to have a little baby in my arms again and I thought of all the pretty things I could make for the baby and just for fun I found a tiny bit of batiste in my scrap bag and some lace and I sewed up a slip with tiny buttons on the shoulders and I made the button holes so carefully and I thought what an awful silly I am because the baby wasn't coming for maybe another six months yet. So I put the slip away in the machine drawer.
Danny and Sadye moved in their things and I made a dinner for Danny and Sadye and her brother and her brother's wife who was going to have a baby too and Artie and jenny were there but not Beatty. I worried about Beatty. Her eyes had such black rings under them and sometimes her face was so yellow.
