It came graduation day for Artie and I had some money saved and I asked Mr. Cooper to help me buy a real gold watch for Artie and we found a lovely one that cost forty dollars and I just had written inside From Mother 1922. I took jenny and Beatty to the exercises and Mr. Cooper gave Jenny the day off.
All the mothers and fathers were there and everybody was so excited and happy and proud. I couldn't hardly believe it that I had a son that was graduating from a great big university. The other people there were kind of rich looking people and Beatty and Jenny and I felt sort of shy and so we didn't talk and laugh like everybody was doing but we just sat quietly. Then after the speeches and all they gave out the prizes and the first prize was the Harriman Memorial Prize and it was for five hundred dollars and they gave it to Artie. Everybody clapped and cheered but I was crying and so I just sat still because I was so ashamed but Beatty and jenny got excited and stood up with everybody and Beatty turned to a lady that was sitting next to her and said that's my brother and everybody turned around and looked at us and smiled. And then when they gave out the degrees Artie got his with some latin words and they meant he got it with a lot of praise. Then all the graduates ran to their folks and everybody kissed everybody and Artie ran to me and he hugged me and hugged me and I hugged him and I couldn't hardly bear to
