So on Thursday I cleaned the house from top to bottom and I covered the sewing machine in the parlor and washed the curtains and washed and ironed a clean table cloth and napkins. And I set the table in the dining room. Danny hadn't come home now for a week so I knew he wouldn't be home tonight for supper. Danny lots of times stayed away like that now sometimes for nearly two weeks.
Jenny came home early and took a bath and put on a new blue crepe de chine dress I made her and she looked nice in blue just like I used to look nice in blue too. Lots more girls were cutting their hair now but Jenny never cut hers. She just sort of fixed it plain not fancy but it looked very nice where she twined it around on her neck in the back. Beatty teased her all the time she was dressing about the poor working girl entertaining her rich boss. But he isn't rich Jenny said he's only just struggling to build up the business and he only takes thirty-five dollars out each week. And he isn't a bit like a boss to me. And then Beatty teased her again and said how does it feel to be in love and Jenny got red and said Beatty don't be so fresh I'm not in love. Mr. Cooper's lovely and he treats me so nice and I can't help admiring him but I'm too young to be in love. And then Artie said here you Beatty you lay off Jenny because where you may think you have brains Jenny has race and in women that's what counts most.
